Teaching Beyond the Basics

Many curricula teach the core subjects and then wait until the high school level to start teaching additional subjects like a foreign language, home economics, participation in government, etc., but with homeschooling, you can immediately start teaching additional subjects. I encourage my children to pick one additional interest to study throughout the school year; granted they sometimes switch interests after learning a little bit about it. I also incorporate Life Skills into each day's curriculum to prepare my children for when they may go out on their own, either to college or the real world. Each day is a different skill so I can cover a variety of lessons each week and some days are multiple skill lessons depending on our schedule that day. Such ife skills include: home management, budgeting, budget shopping, creative outlets, conservation, goal setting and planning, etc. By incorporating these additiona lessons early on gives my kids more tme to practice and ingrain them into their daily lives. This extra time will allow them to be better prepared to be on their own some day.
