When Plans Fail

What do you do when things don't go according to plan? You have three choices: adapt, give up, or keep trying and failing. As a homeschooling parent, I try to plan the lessons ahead of time but things may come up to change our plans. When this happens I have to be flexible and adapt to the situation, whether it be coming up with an alternative lesson on the spot or finding a way to use the circumstances to teach a lesson that could still benefit my kids.

Today we are expecting an eclipse which will create a situation that may make doing our lessons difficult. Instead of worrying about this, I have taken my kids to a lecture about eclipses and we have gotten our glasses for the event. We will be watching it from our backyard. I have turned this into a good real-life science lesson that the kids can remember for years to come.

Other times, when things come up we work around them by adjusting our schedules. As a parent, appointments sickness, etc come up and I have to plan according to those events. When they are scheduled events, such as appointments, I can easily rearrange our schedule to make things work. For the unexpected, we just have to adapt or go with the flow to deal with whatever the situation calls for then work with the lessons being taught us at that moment. There is always a way to turn things around when things don't go according to how we planned.
